Neural Output

Intracellular Recording

• Positive end inside cell, negative end outside cell
• In the soma, record subthreshold potential, but also action potential from other neurons
• In axon, only axon potentials

Extracellular Recording

• Place both positive and negative outside cell
• Smaller action potentials
• Also local field potentials

Local Field Potential

• Large population sum of neurons output
• Low frequency
• Spikes on top
• To extract spikes:
  • High pass filter to get rid of LFP
  • Threshold to detect spike
