What is the Internet?

Scale/Complexity: global, but also regional

• Hosts
• Communication Links
• Routers and Switches

Network edge (clients and servers), network core (interconnected routers)

Common Access Networks:

• Home (DSL, Cable, etc.)
• Enterprise (Ethernet)
• Cellular
• Fiber

Wireless access networks:

• Local Area such as WiFi (802.11)
• Wide Area such as 3G, etc.

Media

• Guided media (copper, coax, etc.)
