I’m a big fan of Professor Kao, but this class was simply not it. I was really excited to take this class, but it was the largest disappointment ever.
Firstly, the class size was just too large. Lectures were not enjoyable with all the dumb questions everyone decided to ask. One guy tried to ask Kao about parse trees…in an ML class? Get me out of here please.
Kao should 100% enforce prerequisites. I never attended lecture other than the first two and got a 98.5% on the midterm. If you’ve taken M146 this class is such a slog. We would be able to learn so much more (and not need Neural Networks 2). We were supposed to do Transformers and other technologies, but we simply did not have time. The homework assignments were not bad at least.
The project has a lot of freedom, so you’re free to do as much as you want. Group sizes are limited to 4.
Overall, horrible class. I was going to take Neural Networks 2, but I no longer want to.
